Leaders of the WP

General scientific rationale

The work package 5, coordinated by Constance Perrin-Joly (CFEE/CNRS, France), with Takele Merid (Adis Ababa University, Ethiopia) as co-leader, aims to examine life courses from a spatial perspective. We will focus on mobility and the long term, examining generational effects and interactions between generations, whether from a family or historical perspectives. The long-term perpective on life courses is confronted with crises, which are not conceived as one-off events but as challenges to the existing order: borders, categories and ways of life. The social sciences generallyassociate crises with unpredictability and surprise; yet a number of phenomena described as "crises" unfold over a long period.

In this WP5, we propose to study crisis in the broadest sense, focusing on two types of crisis: climate and migration; Both the climate crisis and the migration crisis are primarily viewed as the result of power struggles at international and national level. By examining these crises, the aim of the WP is to deconstruct their sudden nature and analyse them over the long term, as long as to examine how crises contribute to rethinking the links between diffeent temporalities (pas, present and fuure). WP5 will focuse on the link between the political and collective dimensions of the crises and their individual experience.

WP5 proposes a joint program for mobility, with specific study countries corresponding to each year. Each WP organises working and exchange sessions based on the data collected, from comparative perspective. The aim is to enable research teams to take a step back and exchange practices and analyses drawn from different theoritical and disciplinary background.
